Re: Snakehunting

Habitat conservation is the way forward. What does it help if the specie is only seen in captivity he is ecologically dead. I agree. There is some place for captive breeding in a conservation sense, but it must be as part of a re-introduction program and very strict guidelines are in place for thos...

Re: Scientific Name Updates

Hope CapeNature is up to speed with the name changes - Imagine applying for a permit to keep Lycodonomorphus inornatus (Olive ground snake) and CapeNature comes an finds a Lamprophis inornatus (Olive house snake). :smt017 :smt021 :D Get hold of a copy of the paper where the name...

Re: Antivenom Producers

Thanks BV. I had a weird call the other day, on a Public Holiday. Someone claimed that the National Health Labratory Services in East London needed venom from our Black Mamba and Puff Adder for antivenom. When I pushed for more information they hung up. I never even got to tell them we don't have an...

Re: Hunting

I used to be completely anti-hunting, but when I stopped looking at it from a completely emotional point of view and thought logically, I began supporting the idea, although I am not sure I will ever be keen to hunt personally. Some of the reasons I support hunting include: - It is better for the en...

Re: Labrador Hip Displacia

I really hope the prognosis is good and you get many more years with this adorable animal. I have a 20 month old lab and I did look into this before I got him. His family had no history (although I realise that does not necessarily mean he won't) and the vet gave me some advice on elements. He said ...

Re: Advice to Potential Hot Keepers

Thanks guys, it is classic. Rod, I do agree with you, as it does seem a bit of a catch 22. But in one of my other books from about the same time, it says if you have enough patience, you can train your pet snake to eat strips of lean meat... :-? For the people too squeemish to feed mice... Suppose ...

Antivenom Producers

I just wanted to check my information. As far as I understand, the only place that produces antivenom in South Africa is South African Vaccine Producers. They also have specific suppliers for the venom they use, one of these being Mike Perry. My questions, are there any other venom suppliers, and if...

Re: Legalities Regarding Turtles/Terrapins in Free State

As far as I am aware, both of those species are on the banned list for the entire country. The only legal specimens I know of are in Zoos and I am not sure if they are allowed to breed them.

The End of an Era - Bill Branch retires

Today we celebrated Bill Branch's retirement. He will not be leaving completely, as Bayworld has accepted him on as a research associate, but after 32 years he has passed on the title of Curator of Herpetology. It has been an honour and priviledge to work with him the past few years, especially havi...

Re: The Boma Reptile World Port Elizabeth

Bill Branch did our opening speech and the cutting of the ribbon almost exactly a year ago!! Is it only a year? Feels like longer. I remember he called himself a senile old man a some such stupid comment that I ripped him off about for the next month or so!! Bill retires officially at the end of th...

Really, that seems like a couple more than a few pics?

Good photos of a good Park, even if you are officially The Competition!

Re: Your pain pics...

In 1993 I tripped up the stairs after supper. I was in boarding school (in Bleomfontein) so had a jar a peanut butter in my hand, which got crushed in the fall and my wrist was cut wide open. I fainted from blood loss while the school nurse called the hospital to check that she could bring me into t...
