Wash the rat and try and get off most of the scent, dry it off and then rub it down with "used mouse sawdust/litter". You can slowly "scent less" and eventually it should take rats. I agree with Aaron, smaller rats are better at first.

I prefer coco chips, very absorbent and easy to spot clean, holds humidity well.
