Re: Respiratory Infection - King snake

F10 SC 4ml in 1l 0.9% saline. Nebulize for 20-30min twice daily. Temps up to 26 (cool end) and 30 (warm end) or constant 28'C. If already in bacterial phase, contact Dr Dorianne Elliot at Onderstepoort to arrange for an examination, culture and accurate antibiotic treatment. Don't waste time with RI's

Re: 2015 Cape Fires

Also consider Angulates only produce 1 egg at a time and potentially 6 over the course of a season. Amazing how they can bounce back.

Re: What Are These

They dont only look like skunks, they smell like them too once they let go of those anal glands! Just be super careful of any 'tame' wildlife...Rabies remains a huge risk, especially in the EC, KZN, Limpopo and Mpumalanga

Re: Whoohoo

Keep no3 on damp clean toweling as you're doing. I've used f10sc at 2-4ml/l saline to dampen the paper in the past. I think this one will be ok provided you dont get opportunistic bacteria in there.

Re: Egg Bound, Paralysis

I honestly dont believe the retained eggs could cause pressure on the spine and secondary paralysis. Paralysis is far more likely to be caused by Ca deficiency (not seen many cases in snakes, but theoretically possible at ovulation and lay), in which case it should be reversible with supplementation...

Re: DNA Snake identification on bite

Snakebite id kits have been out for years in Australia and is widely used in human and veterinary medicine. In our case we have Boomslang and Polyvalent serum and these types of tests will only be useful in determining need for antiserum treatment or not (in the case where no id could be made).

Re: Transport and Captivity Permit frustration

From my experience, CN's staff have been helpful and efficient in every aspect. Far more efficient and organised, not to mention approachable, than any of the other provincial conservation agencies I've had to deal with. Gauteng is slow, but even there I found an angel in disguise. Be patient, but a...

Re: Radiant Heat Panels?

Agreed! My oil heater is a 2500W model and the 1200W of the 3 panels will not be able to compete. Adding another 3 panels would have taken up too much wall surface though. Instead a single oil heater was able to manage things just fine taking up mininal space and costing a fraction of the price. I r...

Re: Radiant Heat Panels?

My room sits at 25-26'C in Summer and I allow it to drop to as low as 16'C in Winter, all the while supplying IR lamp basking spots in each enclosure. My enclosures are large, brick and mortar built and glass/alluminium fronted. I have 90 cubic meters to play with but found even 3 x 400W panels did ...
