Re: NEXT REPTILE EXPO JHB

Who is going to the Reptile expo this weekend?

I will be there on Saturday. It's a 300km drive so will get up pretty early.

Re: Mamba research in Afrikaans

I have to add thought that my neighbors keep finding snakes around the house not because the snakes are returning, but because their yard is a mess with scrap metal all over the place as well as overgrown grass and weed wherever you look.

Re: Mamba research in Afrikaans

Just one drawback. I have already had a call where the guy insists that if I intend to release the snake he would rather kill it now because it will come back again. Pity they dont read that the research is not complete yet. I did promise to keep the snake and he let me catch it. Released it about ...

Re: Photographing Snakes

I was using my canon 600D on av mode with the 18-55mm kit lens, I went as close to the snake as the lens would focus. Will macro mode make a difference to how close the lens will focus? The settings I used were as follows: 55mm f/5.6 The shutter speed was at 1/20 or 1/30 of a second. iso 800 I woul...

Re: Photographing Snakes

Turn on the macro function on your camera to take closeup photos. It's usually a dial or button that look like the picture below, but can also be on an electronic menu on some camera's: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_05pJRvEyqWc/TTppK_Y0EPI/AAAAAAAAAPA/1uI0mJqMmoI/s1600/macro+dial.png

All the site admin have to do is install the Tapatalk plugin for phpBB and then those of us using iPhone/iPad, Blackberries, Android and Chrome phones will be able to browse the forum using the Tapatalk application. The plugin is free, so maybe the site admin can download it here: http://www.tapatal...

Re: Can you keep puff adders together?

I don't want to steer the thread off topic, but is it ok to keep Gaboon adders together? Obviously not during feeding time... I bought two yearling females yesterday and currently keeping them separate, but if it's safe to put young ones together I would like to do that because I'm still busy finish...

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

Dont get me wrong, its a dream enclosure, excellent work and must have cost a fortune! It shows love and passion for the hobby and your animals. I just feel that as reptile keepers and the conservationists, we should also take our carbon footprint into consideration. We need to start looking at gre...

Re: New Boa Constrictor tank opinions.

Hi, thanks for the reply. What would you say is the cheapest place to buy wood, the chipwood I'm buying is at mica but its something like R420 for a sheet. What else would you recommend as glueing the wood together? Thanks. R420 is probably close to standard pricing. I don't work with wood too ofte...

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

I updated the roof to only have two fiberglass sheets. I'm sure this will considerably lower the greenhouse effect. http://www.sareptiles.co.za/gallery/albums/userpics/21179/DSCF6886.jpg Am I the only one here that feels that the enclosure, as nice as it is, is a bit over the top? I'm sure I didn't ...

Re: New Boa Constrictor tank opinions.

Hi Redmachine, Sounds like it will work and a great project, but you might want to go for laminated super wood instead of chipboard if your budget allows for the more expensive option. I will also use Contact Adhesive to glue the glass sliders to the wood, because it's very strong and easy to work w...

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

@Bushviper, no your advice is very welcome and don't worry about Bushbaby, I won't tell him you send me his Gaboons... Here is the first updated pic. I changed the substrate to potting soil and some leafs. http://www.sareptiles.co.za/gallery/albums/userpics/21179/DSCF6883.jpg

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

Hey Jacques, that enclosure has come out amazing great work. RESPECT :smt023 ! I think he will be happier with a different substrate. I use peat, leaves, bark and mulch all mixed up. You could go with a very nice bioactive substrate in that enclosure. You can add all the worms and bugs that will make...

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

@Herphabitat, yes the entire roof is made from that green fiberglass plates and it's really allot more trouble than it's worth. If I continue to have heating issues I will replace the roof since it's not that expensive for normal metal corrugated sheets anyway. So far I seem to have it under control...
