Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

@Bushviper, thanks for providing me with your expert view. I agree that layer of bark chips needs to go. Just normal potting soil will be fine. That plus a layer of leaves (autumn is upon us) will be more appreciated. I will change the substrate with potting soil as soon as it stops raining. I actua...

Re: Striped Skaapsteker - constrictor?

I have seen these eat a couple of times and each time they would bite and then constrict. Maybe its because their venom is weak and wont kill the prey item quickly enough so adding a good squeeze helps and prevents the prey(especially mice) from injuring it? I also observed the same feeding behavio...

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

Thank you very much, that's gives me a much better idea what direction I should go in.

The undergrowth is pretty overgrown/dense, so I will look at ways I can improve on that in the cage, but still allow one to easily spot the snake and allow for safe handling inside the enclosure.

Re: My Gaboon enclosure project

Thanks for all the compliments. I would like to improve the "look" of the habitat and substrate. I decided to use bark for now, because I don't have any leave litter that looks attractive and also not sure how it can be cleaned before using it on the enclosure floor. Cleaning the bark was ...

My Gaboon enclosure project

Hi guys, I would like to share my recently finished enclosure building project for my male Gaboon Adder. Re: Catching a Cape Cobra with a rodent trap

That is interesting because I caught a rather big puff adder in a similar cadge as well. But mine was not planned, I actually wanted to catch field mice for my Brown house snakes! I also caught a Rinkhals by mistake the first time when I setup the trap to catch a couple of rats that escaped from th...

Catching a Cape Cobra with a rodent trap

Hi guys, Yesterday afternoon I came across a Cape Cobra near my house, but before I could catch it went down a hole. So I decided to setup a trap... I placed a live mouse in a rodent trap and positioned it so that the cage entrance is blocking the hole exit. http://i43.tinypic.com/28jel8i.jpg 6 Hour...

Re: Rinkhals Babies

I caught a very small baby Rinkhals yesterday outside on the stoop, but it was allot darker in colour. Already released it unfortunately and didn't take pics.

Also found a 1 to 1.2m Cape Cobra today outside the house, but it went down a hole just as I was about to catch it.

Re: Scammer Alert - tim111

Thanks Mitton, just hope no-one send him money already. Basically they brainwash you into paying for the specimen and shipping and after a couple of days they contact you again with the story that customs detained the animal and more money is needed before they will release the shipment for export. ...
