This is for anything with regards to reptiles which is not species specific or over a broad band of reptiles. Be it husbandry, caging, etc. you can post it here.

I have enough pics of the reptiles, which I took about 2 months ago, so anyone wanting to do a write up, you may use the pics!!

xray, the curator (Laurence) is actually a very nice guy and very knowledgable. He isn't the best public speaker though.

OK Bushbaby, I can accept the fact that he may not be very good public speaker, but still.....

Anyway, your pictures..... My I ask what was/is your opinion about what you have seen and documented with your pictures?

Well... no comment!! lol

I have to agree with you. Even then they were feeding the Leo's greens and I just said to BV that I hope they are getting protein as well.

The Gaboons have been in that condition for a few years already. It doesnt help speaking to the curators. They seem to know everything. You're just an idiot looking at reptiles through glass.

So then, I am not the only one who are unhappy about the situation there! Must say I am a bit relieved about that, but very saddened for the sake of the animals there. And with all the "politics" going on about keeping "exotic" animals I feel that the situation at the zoo is not helping our case at all! They will say, but if the National Zoological Gardens cant even keep indigenous reptiles in tip top condition, how will a lot of "amateurs" be able to do provide for the right conditions for indigenous as well as exotic reptiles!

I know the workings of the zoo a bit beter than most considering I have worked with some of their curators for over 20 years now. The biggest downfall at the reptile section (but also the zoo itself) is politics. People have been placed in positions for which they have no knowledge, qualifications or interest and the people who have been working there for years get sidelined. This demoralizes the people who do the actual work. Recently everyones overtime was taken away and as a result a number of people that I know have had to give up their houses. Okay that is just the background.

The person who is currently in charge of the reptile section spends all day surfing various websites and in actual fact has very little knowledge of reptiles. The exact same people who worked in the park with the animals 10 years ago are still working there so they should know better. Their decisions are overridden by this manager and as a result they have to rely on him to make all decisions.

I still believe that a complaint to the right people could have the desired effect. Specific complaints with any photographic proof/reference would make it rather difficult for them to squirm out of. Possibly if someone could walk around and mention/document what is wrong in each cage or section then the animals will get the attention they require.

I dont care that I know each of the people involved personally and have been to braai at th most of their houses. I have tried talking to them in the past but they just ignore me.

In the letter to the director of the zoo, offer to anonymously go "inspect" the zoo in 3 weeks time and give him feedback as to what you think of any improvements during that time. The real prize would be to go see what they have off-display because that is where the nasty stuff usually takes place. That will not be possible however.

Write the letters because the animals deserve better!

Thanks Bushviper. It seems like politics is again doing it's thing! This all seems so familiar and this is what is happening all over the place. I am a scientist myself with a PhD in Geology and we are also seeing the same thing happening in many other areas of science as well. But unfortunately I have only been in the "reptile thing" for two years now and do not have enough experience or confidence in this matter to "accurately judge" the conditions of reptiles or the conditions in which they are kept. I am still a "novice" in your field but keen to learn and that is why I joined this site. But what I am trying to say is that I don't have the experience to try and go to the National Zoological Gardens to document what is wrong with the enclosures or reptiles being kept there. I see things and my limited knowledge tells me what I see is wrong, but that is as far as it goes. If enough people agree (and that is people with lots of experience in this field) with what I have seen, which appears to be the case, maybe such an request to "inspect" the zoo and to document these problems should come from the THA and the people there with some clout behind their opinions. I would gladly participate in such an effort if I am in the country at that time. I will even "write up" the comments in a document, but I don't think I am the one who will be able to "inspect" the zoo on my own.

REALLY wish i could, such a pity that i already have a trip planned for this weekend. Going scorpion hunting in the Kalahari Grasslands. But if you find that this weekend is too short notice for most, and move it to next weekend, I will be there.
