Cost to maintain your collections(monthly)

Postby Primogen » Tue May 06, 2014 9:23 am

So I have just recently redone my budget and was wondering what everybody spends monthly maintaining their collections?
This includes everything that involves your collection: Food, Cleaning Supplies, Substrates etc. also Electricity(only if you monitor it separately for the collection).

I buy in bulk so these are my costs broken down for a monthly cost.

Food R450
Electricity R150 or (up to R350 in winter)
Substrates R100
Cleaning & Sundry R50

Also keep a savings account for the emergency "purchase" :D or Vet visit.

No one is obliged to post anything, i'm just curious.

Just for a reference, how are you heating your cages (pretty sure that would also affect the cost of electricity)?

Also how many animals are you feeding?

Thanks :)

I use heatpads and ceramics, as well as a panel heater in winter.
It does affect costs but this is just what it cost me monthly and my setup works pretty well for me.

I feed 20 snakes and a few hatchlings.

Food - breed my own rodents that eat about quarter to half a bag of pellets an month - less than R100
Electricity - Does not affect me (Still live with my dad :D )
Substrates - Around R50 - R100 Depending on substrate and how messy snakes are

I have 13 snakes
3-1-4 Leopard Gecko
1-1-2 Bearded Dragon
0-1 Brown House Snake
2-3 Ball Python
1-1 Western Hognose
1-1 Kenyan Sand Boa
3-2 Corn Snake
0-0-1 Bosc Monitor
0-1 Taiwanese rat snake

I am too sacred to work it out because then I might want to get rid of some snakes. I estimate it to be a few thousand a month though. Vet bills last year were possibly around R6000 or so.
