Is there any way to distinguish between a normal and a HET? Or do you simply trust in the breeders genetics knowledge and breeding records to 'guess' what he is selling you is in fact what it is?

Heterozygous or "het" is a genetic term that the animal in question carries a specific gene like "albino" ect.
There is no way of telling a "het" animals from a normal. So do not buy "hets" unless you absolutely trust the breeder/person you are purchasing the animal from.

Thanks for the reply. I somewhat expected that would be the case...

It however poses somwhat of a problem, even for trusted breeders if they were to for example would be breeding HET Albino to HET Albino that on paper gives 25% Albino, 25% Normal and 50% HET Albino. There would be no way of being sure about 75% being Normal or HET Albino...

Then they refer to them as 66% possible hets. Just like if you breed a het to a normal, then the babies are 50% possible hets.

Also make sure you know what kind of gene it is, I've seen / heard people talking about selling / buying het Pastels (Ball Pythons and Boas), het Salmon (Boas) and het Jungle (Leopard Geckos).
