Second envenomation by Bosc monitor

Second envenomation by Bosc monitor

Postby Boadicea » Thu Mar 26, 2009 12:33 pm

On Saturday morning one of my Bosc monitors bit me on the side of the palm of my hand. He is a subadult and I am still working on taming him. He hung on for a couple of minutes and at one point squeezed down harder when I tried to dislodge him. About fifteen to twenty minutes later the now familiar symptoms started - stiffness in my neck and shoulder muscles, headache, a slightly swollen oesophagus, a feeling of neuralgia in my face and scalp. It lasted the whole day and started wearing off late afternoon. No difficulty breathing but a feeling of obstruction when swallowing food. No difficulty swallowing though apart from some discomfort. This is the second time this has happened to me with a Bosc monitor bite. The first time I thought I was envenomated because I tried to squeeze his jaws open at the hinges. This time I knew better but I think he squeezed his venom glands himself when he bit down harder.
Anyone else have this experience with their Bosc's before?

Whew. Interesting observation...I've been saving up to get one of these in the not too distant future, so it's a good thing to know.
Have you got any photos of what the bite looks like?

Thanks for sharing.

I can't really comment on this as I've never been bitten before by a monitor, I have heard the rumors and I think there was even a study on their venom, which would explain why I have observed my bosc's swolling live prey...

Buck... Don't suppose you'd be willing to let one of yours take a chunk out of a finger or hand...?

You guys are talking about a bosc monitor lizard right? Like a savannah monitor.
These guys have venom?
I'm not convinced!!

Thanks Boadicea, I'm sure this will be a very helpful account in the future.

Boadicae I have had a few people (doctors) question this envenomation but I now have 4 reports from reputable people who all tell of similar symptoms. The others mentioned stomach cramps and diarrhea which you do not. Can you recall anything like that?
