Outdoor Monitor Encloure

Outdoor Monitor Encloure

Postby Durban Keeper » Wed Jan 21, 2015 12:58 pm

I bought a Boscs monitor over a year ago as an adult. He had spent the majority of his life in a wooden cage 1.6M x 0.4M in daimater. We decided to build him an outdoor enclosure. The process was a time consuming and tedious task and the raw material alone cost 3 times what we paid for the Monitor itself, but its been worth every cent and bit of effort. He has been living in it full time now for almost 3 months.

We dug out a hole, laid a foundation and constructed a wall.

We purchased the wood and wire and got stuck into buiding a frame.

Next we plastered and painted the walls, planted some grass and built a hide. I recently introduced some trees and shrubs to the enclosure also.

Here is our beautiful Lizard.

Thanks for looking,

Dean, that is awesome Bud.
Now when is the boy getting a wife to join him in that impressive enclosure.

Thanks guys. So far he has been doing well in it. I often just go sit down inside his cage and he comes onto my lap and together we admire the crazy world outside his cage lol

That looks awesome!!! Well done on a great build.

I know its not always possible, but this is my ideal way to keep a pet!!

Do you have any heat sources in the cage for night/winter temps?

I hope his nature does not change now that he thinks birds flying over are his enemy etc. I think spending quality time with him will do you both the world of good.

I was worried about his behaviour Arno, but its been a few months already and he has not become aggressive or nervous at all. He gets attention and love daily.

Nice enclosure Dean, well done! Are you not concerned he will burrow out under your foundation in time and when you least expect it as monitors do? I have used bricks like paving under the substrate of all my outdoor lizard pits. the narrow gaps between the bricks allows rain water to drain but prevents inmates digging out. You could also fit a mesh base under the ground at a desired depth which serves the same purpose but the wire will rust away over time and have to be "monitored" for weak spots.

Clearvue have a mesh which is meant to survive being underground. That will not rust and might be a viable option. Chat to a local installer and get offcuts and just put it around the edges of the cage. They seldom start digging in the middle of the cage.
