Baboon spiders

Postby bigred » Wed Aug 03, 2005 10:03 pm

Hi
I got 4 baboons, ranging from about 6cm to 12cm in length,
and recently a tiny sun something tarantula; it's got the cutest little black and white striped legs.

Postby Corncrazy » Thu Aug 04, 2005 2:41 pm

Hey guys.

How u all doin?

Today i went to school and i saw a guy showin these people his spider he had in a bottle, the poor little guy only has 5 legs, he was chasin people with the guy. He was quiet a nice size, so i felt sorry for the spider and i gave the guy R20 for it.

How are these guys like, wat do i need for him? Or would u think its better if i release him?

Thanks

Hi,

That's so sad.

Baboon spiders only make a burrow once in their lives, which they live in. Releasing it will only do harm.

Unfortunately they are also protected, thus you are not allowed to keep them.

They do quite well though. Eat crickets, and you could build a burrow for it.

Best is to contact the Spider Club guys and see what they say.

Well done Cc. Maybe it would be an idea to nurse the animal to health and release it in spring/summer.

Oh, the baboons are all rescues, and are overflow from a rehab centre.

Corn crazy. The spider will grow the legs back and after it sheds the next time you will get a hell of a fright. I know I did when I saw that the first time. Take a picture and possibly we can help you determine what type of spider it is.

Baboon spiders are only protected because of unscrupulous over collecting for the pet trade. To keep a few out for educational purposes does not do any harm. I have also heard that females cannot really be released as they cannot dig new burrows and line it with silk.

Be careful as there is one baboon spider which occurs in the Cape which has a very nasty venom and can be considered as dangerous.

Harpactira lightfooti is the only species of baboon spider important to medicine, as bite victims have shown strong neurotoxic effects, including burning pain at bite site, vomiting, shock, turning pale and muscular seizure.
They are not that common, and are rarely seen in captivity.
Say hello to...

Actually... I thought of a way to do that today. Take.....wait for it.....a comdom! Clean it of any 'lubricant'. Fill it with water and jam it in the freezer. When frozen solid, remove the latex and use the column of ice as a mould for the burrow. Simply place it in a tub on a shallow layer of ground at about a 30 degree angle. Now pack more ground very tightly around it so that the blunt end is just sticking out. Wait for the ice to melt and..bingo!! theres your burrow.
