keeping Baboon spiders

Hi all,

Today i recieved an email from a good friend who works for San Parks and Cites, stating that it will soon be legal to breed, sell and keep local baboon spiders to eliminate illegal wild harvesting and minimizing the risk of exotic species becoming invasive.

I for one am very excited about this implementation, and hope it will turn out well.

I don't know much about spiders (only started with them about 2 weeks ago), but I know a few people who would be very very pleased if this happens.

yes i know! As an avid Tarantula and baboon spider breeder and keeper i am very happy and excited!

I got a tarantula to get over my fear of them. Lol. Now I have 4 of them. All still small.

Its amazing to see them grow up. Best way of getting over the fear. I have 15 now and are starting to breed the big ones again.

Yes it is indeed true.
But there is still something to be worked out.
Will only be a few species for now.
And then there will only be a select few to breed them. we will just be able to keep them legally.
But will be awesome to at least be able to keep some local in one collection.

As was mentioned above, there is a policy that is currently being worked on.

Are any of you going to this mentioned "course". Where could one be kept up to date regarding this policy?

I think this is going to be great for the future of our hobby.

Still in the process of being sorted out!
Both the course and the permit system, so waiting is in order.

Read the link I posted, will give you some information.

BV is part of the group who is busy with the whole permit system, so I'm sure once something comes from it and it gets passed something will be posted on the Forum.

This is still a suggestion and it will not be overnight. Once it has been approved then we will know exactly how this will be implemented but I have high hopes for this project.

Sanparks and CITES have nothing to do with this decision or implementation.

Why did I receive an email from them and how will they implement it if the government has to approve if it has nothing to do with them?

As BV said, Sanparks and CITES has nothing to do with it.
It will be implemented by Gauteng Nature Conservation and policed by them along with the hobbyists.
As to why you got an email from them, I have no idea, but they are probably just passing on info they heard.

Sanparks is the South African National Parks, which manages a system of parks which represents the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country, and:
CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

Neither of these would have anything to do with keeping Baboon spiders.
