Grammastola Pulchripes

Grammastola Pulchripes

Postby AS.Legion » Wed Nov 14, 2012 7:36 am

So I got a pulchy a while back and till now she was a breeze.

Lately though she has gone completely... weird.

For example:
I have started using a paintbrush to gently nudge her leg to tell her I am there, she will turn immediatly and actually bite the brush then go into defensive posture, front legs up and really showing of her fangs.

This happened maybe a month back and was not to much concern to me.

2 days ago however something really strange happened.
I took her waterbowl out to clean and fill up. When I took it out she moved so she was facing the positiong to where there the waterbowl was.

When I put the bowl back she charged and covered around 10cm in the blink of an eye. I did manage to pull my hand out before she bit.

Any advice? Must I upload a pic for a positive ID?

All my T's do this. They're just getting defensive it's not really something to worry about. They don't like being bothered, or contrary to popular belief actually being handled. My T's attack anything that moves in the cages. I guess it's up to it's personality.

You can post pictures if you like.
How big is the spider?

It happens, where a docile spider is aggressive and aggressive spider is docile, Not normal for G. Pulchripes to be aggressive though.
Well any Grammostola species is normally very docile.

For one, your substrate is wrong for your spider.
Need to use palm peat.
Need to also give her about 10cm to 15cm deep so she can burrow if she chooses to do so.

That is G. Pulchripes.

Hm will change that then ASAP.
I am not sure what I am using right now. It says it is designed for T's. I think it is one of the ExoTerra products. Will check it out.

What do you think of cocout fibre /husk

and it is rather deep. She loves digging herself in.

Coconut fibre does not seem to work very well. Coir/Palm peat is best. Just make sure to soak the peat in boiling water to kill all plant spores in there. If you don't you'll have mushrooms and fungus growing in there after a while. You can also take a plastic plant pot, cut it in half and put it in as a hide. A happy spider is a spider you cannot see.

I got a fake half bark tree thing as a hide. When she sheds she will go there till she is done.

Strangely enough she prefers to be outside otherwise.... Or do you think she might have gotten to big for the hide and is getting agro cause she cant get in?

As spiders get bigger they tend not to hide as much, and sit out in the open allot more than when they were smaller.
You can just get a bigger hide for her.

As Colin said, rather use palm peat.

I use bark that I put flat on the substrate, eventually they dig under it or I make hides out of polystyrene for my spiders.
