New to the Tarantula Hobby

Postby Boeti » Sat Nov 16, 2013 11:56 am

Hi Guys,
i have entered into the Tarantula keeping hobby. i have in the past kept snakes including puff adders and cobras (used to milk venom), scorpions and birds of prey. but never spiders or tarantulas!
My cousin is a avid keeper and lover of these creatures and he gave me a Curly Hair. About the size of a Matchbox. :D
i got it onto Peat , feeding it little larger that pinheads , and everything is going well, feeds readily.
quick question:
it burrows , so i made sure the terrarium (glass aquarium type box ) has more ground-area than height.
it stays there most of the time (underground) where my cousins T's are happy outside the burrows.

1. Will Spikey (named by my daughter) become accustomed to me? still early days?
i am at this stage not trying to handle her at all.
2 i see shops have lighting in the cages(terrariums) i have none and would like to keep it natural
3. would i need any heating? i am in Pretoria and our average temp is pretty good
Regards
Boeti

Hi there Boeti, they become more confident as they grow up and adults spend more time out in the open. They don't need any extra lighting just keep remove any food remains so it doesn't go mouldy. Temps will be fine in summer but might get aa bit cold in winter up that side.

Good luck and enjoy, I'm sure you will be looking for your next T quite soon;)
