[Chameleons]

I am hoping to find many interesting insect species in Mexico – so far so good!

The large beetles I am hoping to find haven’t really shown themselves yet but scorpions are a real issue here, with the first death of the season having just been posted in the local newspaper which said it was an alacranes. I have no idea what type they are – just that we now have to be very careful at night walking around the house and have found them lurking in our wardrobe. A friend of ours woke up one night screaming when a scorpion managed to get into bed with him and ... into his nightclothes. Yes, it did sting him there. Not once but twice! Fortunately, the pain kept him awake and able to seek medical assistance......

Leaf cutter ants are very common. They tend to appear at night and can quickly destroy a tree. Understandably they are not popular with gardeners!

(We did find a young green iguana hiding in someone’s washing machine the other day….I’ll post photos of iguanas and turtles later.)

the most toxic scorpions species in mexico is Centruroides spp.
the scorpion on your picture is an Centruroides, maybe Centruroides cf. infamatus.

be careful, they are very toxic.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the warning. Fortunately, the rains have started (only rains at night here!) and it appears that the scorpion season has passed. I haven't seen one in couple of weeks. We have been told that this species is common around the Lake area as it is surrounded by rocky mountains. After your warning we shall be more careful in future...
