Caterpillar Mimicking ......

Caterpillar Mimicking ......

Postby Westley Price » Tue May 27, 2014 5:11 pm

A few night ago I was walking around the garden with my flashlight. I usually go past the mulberry tree to check what is about. From a distance I saw a caterpillar hanging from one of the leaves so I went to investigate. To my surprise this was no typical caterpillar, but it had funny protrusions on it's dorsal, which I assumed was to mimic something.

For the life of me I could not figure out what is was trying to mimic. When threatened if would fold it's body in half so that the protrusions stood high and the for body leaned forward. Only after releasing it, I was checking the pics and realised that it must be mimicking a mantis! What do you all recon?
