Third one this month

Postby Psychogav » Sun Jul 26, 2009 4:18 pm

This is the 3rd Afroc we have come across this month in the Stanger area, all have been removed from potentially harmful situations and after a delousing have been released. But they are such lovely snakes with the softest skin.

This is a great thing you are doing! Were the other pythons a similar size?

In which situations/environments are you finding these snakes?

Two of them were found surrounded by a group of people throwing all sorts of things at them and one was found in a pumphouse where the workers were refusing to work unless the snake was removed. We are happy they are safe and sound and dropped at a reserve nearby.

There was another found round the corner at Zimbali recently. Much bigger than these though, around 2m or so.
Was not killed, someone was called to remove it.

I have stood by the burning cane and nothing seems to come out the other side, I get the impression everything goes underground when the cane burns, either that or it gets cooked. I will keep an eye out when they burn just in case. These three had unfortunately stumbled upon civilization (sic) though. There do seem to be a lot of them around at the moment though.

@ Rob - The one found at Zimbali was 3,2 m. No one was called to collect it. We released or rezoned it to another area of the Estate.
It was caught coming through the electrified fence on the 23rd May 2009. It did not suffer any injuries, unlike the one in February 2008 which was electrocuted when trying to come through the fence.

I just love my job, working on these Estates. I actually get to catch and release quite a number of snakes across the three Estates.
