Madagascan Ground Boas

Madagascan Ground Boas

Postby Bushbaby » Sat Dec 26, 2009 12:08 pm

Thought I would finally share pics of my Madagascan Ground Boas Acrantophis madagascariensis.

They are all related, but all 3 differ from each other. Hope you like the pics (and more importantly the specimens).

Thanks. They are about a year old now, so still a while before they will be breeding. It's 2 males and a female. I'm happy with those odds... for now.

Thanks. I also think they're damn nice. They have a wonderful feeding response, and I can handle them without worrying that they are going to bite.

Thanks Constrictor girl & Karin. I'm not 100% sure. I've seen them at around 1.5 meters, but I'm not sure how big they can / are supposed to get.

BB, there is a HUGE one at chameleon village! When I saw it I could not believe it was a madagascan ground boa lol

If anyone is going there soon, check it out.

Beautiful snakes BB. Do you know their lineage out of interest?
Whats this nonsense about genetically modified food being dangerous and not tasting good!?! I had a leg of salmon yesterday and it was delicious!

Garth all the local Madagascan boas were imported just before CITES closed the trade down in 1976 and from there they were bred in reasonable numbers. Some new genetic material was obtained from Houston zoo about 10 years ago but other than that most of them originated from that original group which is rather disappointing. Some Dumerils crosses were also produced a number of years ago and these have been gone on to breed again and have contaminated the A. madagascariensis bloodlines.

The true Madagascan boas can almost all be traced back to Hennie Erasmus, Transvaal Snake Park, Port Elizabeth museum or Bill Branches private collection.
