Dumeril Breeding Questions

Dumeril Breeding Questions

Postby rolandslf » Tue May 25, 2010 9:17 am

Greetings all.
I will try to keep this as brief as possible.

Is this the time that they should start doing their thing?
What should overnight maximum and minnimum temperatures be?
Is an infrared spotlight ok to use to keep ambient temperatures up at night?
Is it alright if I leave them together till the end of August?

I ask these questions as a result of the debacle that followed with all of the babies dying this year, and I would like to try and get it right this time round.
This will be my third season of trying to breed with this pair.

Mating season is theoretically ending now although lately I've had a few anomolies where snakes have been breeding out of season.

Lower to mid 20's

Yes. Make sure the cooler end of the thermal gradient does not go below 20 deg.

Yes.

Thank You Very Much Froot.

I have observed the male trying his thing with her since as early as mid January, I have not seen any positive lock though.
Having said that, in the past two seasons I never saw any positive locks either, and the female was definitely fertilised.

My overnight lower temps have been lower to mid 20's on the heat pads which I now have on 24/7, but the ambient temps have been dropping to 16 or so.
I suppose I should get an Infra Red ASAP, to create an overnight ambient hot spot.

Would they automatically stay in the warmer temp zone?

A gravid female that knows what she's doing will but otherwise not necessarily. I've had boas stay in the colder area that was too cold for days, it would be better to force the colder temps to desired levels. You can use a heat pad with a temperature controller too, they are more energy efficient. That would be my personal preference.

Thanks once again Froot.

You have answered a question before I can pose it.
I have noticed that my female likes to stay on the heating pad, and very seldom comes off it.

The male however is another story, I will often find him in the water bowl, even when the ambient cage temp is around 19 or so.
The problem is that he is very susceptible to RI's, this has been from a hatchling. He is not currently showing any symptons, and I check him over, every Saturday.
