Whoohoo

Whoohoo

Postby rolandslf » Sun Aug 17, 2014 2:35 pm

I decided to spend a bit of extra time this weekend with my snakes checking out their overall condition.
Normally it is just a quick glance, clean cages and feed.

I am pleased to say that my Female Dumerills Boa is more Gravid than I have ever seen her. She had not eaten for a month before these pics were taken
Yesterday however she absolutely smashed 2 medium sized rats, she eats right through up to, and including giving birth.
Is this the first season where I actually get more than the 1 or 2 live babies from her.

I would also like a couple of the more knowledgeable Boa / Dumerill Boa Breeders to answer a question for me.
Is it not a bit early in the season for her to be looking so big, considering that she should only give birth in late January / February.

Lekker man! Let's hope this year is your year.

I recall your previous disappointments so I am keeping all my extremities crossed ;)

Her girth and posture looks promising!

Good luck Roland, hope it works out this year.

She does look nice and big, do you know her length and girth? I will take a pic and measurements of my girl tonight, she is HUGE, would love to know what other sizes are.

Thank You All for the comments.

@ Westley - I also have all things crossed. As stated, this is the biggest and roundest I have ever seen her.

@ Mitton - I am reluctant to disturb her, but the male is her length and almost just as big in girth, he is just a fatty though, so I will measure him, and post his measurements.

Congrats Roland.
Just from my experience I have had my female normally give birth around middle march, but I dont think it is unusual for her to be big this early, due to the weather changing soo much. I know I have seen over the Christmas period new born Dumeril boas in petshops.

@Rian - Thanks B.
@ mania - Yip, the weather is a bit upside down.
@Mittob - I will try again on the weekend. My boy was very unco-operative, so I couldn't get the measurements, and you know how strong and obstinate this species is.

I measured my female, she also did not want to sit still but she measured just over 2m, 31cm girth and weighs 12kg. Will take pics this weekend and start a new thread.

Great stuff, I will get some assistance over the weekend and do the measurements, and then if you don't mind, add them to your new thread.
They say that true pure Dumerils Boas should not go much over 6 feet (2m) in length.
It is rumoured that any specimens much over this length are hybrids / intergrades with Madagascan Ground Boas.
I however can't vouch for how true this really is.

Roland there are very few hybrid Madagsacan boas in South Africa. It is interesting that when looking at DNA they have found very little difference between Ground boas and Dumerils boas. They think they might be the same species. I dont buy that. I have seen pure Dumerils grow to almost 2.5 metres so dont just go on size either.

100% Arno. As far as I know, my pair is pure.

Now for an update on the girl, she seems reluctant to coil her lower body, and will rather lay across the heat pad with her body sort of folded in half.
The pic below was taken on 07 September 2014, and her lower third of her body is definitely out of shape.

I note that the babies move up and down inside her, dependant on what portion of her lower body is on the heat pad.

I will also try to take and post monthly pics until she gives birth, so that a pictorial history of her gestation period is created.

That is exciting ! Interesting about the babies, I wouldn't have thought that was even possible.
