Wow! This sounds like a big range extension to me.

I don't think they have been found anywhere near there. The closest is for north eastern Cape.

Mongoose and I were chatting and he mentioned them being found near Postmasburg/Kathu recently. I will see if I can get more details, but this is still far from Prieska!

Well Done. You should post it top SARCA.

Prieska is between Putsonderwater and Voelgeraas!

(Those towns are between 100km and 200km South-East of Upington in the Northern Cape!)

Well not exactly where you would want to be bitten by a Black mamba. In the middle of nowhere!

The person who was given the most antivenom from a mamba bite was either bitten in Prieska or Hot as hell. Which one is closer to Bloemfontein? They were bitten in the one place and got antivenom in the other.

Wow ok now that is a big range extension, perhaps a stow away in a car?. It would be great if you could find additional specimens.

I think the Northern Cape is highly under rated. I know of many butterflies, birds and now obviously snakes that have appeared at spots where nobody thought they would be. It would be interesting to see if other species that normally share the same habitat as mambas (boomslang, Mozambique spitters, etc) also occur there.

Can't wait for the next Repitle Records topic from bugs...

I have heard lots of stories about mambas in the Prieska area over the years but never paid much attention to them. It was so far out of their range that it just did not seem possible.
I have to agree with Bushsnake that as far as Northern Cape is concerned, there's still lots to be learned. I will most propably regret revealing this bit of info but there are lots of woodi in that area espescially around the Copperton area. Copperton is an copper mining ghost town.

My boss at the museum found a mamba in Olifantshoek, it is 250km out of there known distribution.

She also found python.

Yeah, similar story here, I live on Witsand Nature Reserve (Central Northern Cape, about 280km west of Kimberley), and we found a mamba too, pity though, murphy's law - NO CAMERA NEARBY!!! So I have no official record of the sighting...

Where would you like to get tagged by a Mamba? This is very interesting. If more specimens are found, would this locality be isolated? Sorry, but I'm not familiar with this area...
