Does anybody know if these species are available in S.A. ?

frogs1.jpg

Sorry, but I don't know any names or species...

Been thinking of starting a new project, I'll obviously study up on them a lot before obtaining some, but I just wanted to find out if these are legal to keep and readilly available or not ?

Even if they are not, can anyone give me some info on what species are legal...

I want to fashion myself a living nightlight with running water and living plants...Kinda like the one I saw on this site Gaboon was busy with...

Sorry guys,

Don't know if it's just me, but I'm getting the feeling that people are ignoring me for some reason...

I posted a subject called " Info please " a while ago, but I've had no response, don't know if it's just the site upgrades contributing to this, but some help would be much appreciated please...

If anybody would be interested in sharing some knowledge of amphibians at all, please read the subject.

Thank you

Poison Dart (or Arrow) Frog (many species beneath the genera Dendrobates, Phyllobates, Epipedobates, and Mantella)
Description: Colors can be red, orange, yellow, white, black, green or blue, or a combination of colors. Adult size is around 3 inches.
Housing: Any size terrarium will work, as you shouldn't keep more than one of each sex together, nor different species. A 10 gallon will work fine for a pair. Temperatures should stay between 65 and 96 degrees F. A small pool should be provided, and humidity should be kept high.
Food: The best captive food for these frogs are flightless fruit flies. Pinhead crickets are sometimes used, but may contain parasites.
Lifespan: Depending upon species, 6-20 years.
Behavior: Most poison dart frogs lose their poison in captivity, but care should be taken not to allow other pets to have contact with these frogs, and hands should be washed after any contact.

Thanks Macadder, I was stumped with this one.

Thanks for your reply, macAdder...

Really appreciate it !

Next question...

Where can you buy these little critters ? I've been asking around, but most people have no idea, or they even tell me that they are illegal to keep...

I've seen a lot of pictures on the Web and also this site, of people keeping them, so do you need a permit ?

What are the legalities considering these frogs ?

I tried calling the Gauteng Nature Conservation Centre Yesterday, but as per usual I waited on hold for 15 minutes before finally getting the phone put down in my ear...

Any other ways of finding out ?
