Reed Frog, Harare, Zimbabwe

Postby Nick H » Tue Jan 31, 2012 11:35 am

Hello

I found this lovely frog in a vlei in Harare recently, but even with the help of a frog field guide I can't decide whether this is a Sharp-nosed (H. acuticeps) or Bocage's Sharp-nosed (H. benguellensis) Reed Frog! It was about 25-30mm in length. Please could someone help me ID it correctly?

Beautiful frog and pictures.

Can't help with the ID, but just wait for Fooble to come online....no pressure ;)

Nice photo's Nick ,
i will concur with your two ID'S of H. acuticeps and H. benguellensis.

But H. benguellensis is what i would suggest.
They are almost impossible to ID from photo's unless you know the variability of the populations.
Organized crime comes in more forms than one.

Thanks everyone - It is a beautiful frog!
Fooble, thank you for your helpful comment. Just wondering, what is the best way of differentiating between the two species?
