@westley - No they aren't albinos. They're leucistic, which means that they have black eyes and faint pigmentation, usually on their heads. Albinos have pink eyes and a complete lack of pigmentation. @Bushviper - Nope, leucistics
They really have grown. It's amazing how quickly too. They are so cute and the gills look like they have two pigtails on either side. They are fascinating creatures and I'm really enjoying the progress updates. Will be great to see them pregnant/gravid? some day too.
Yes, yes they are ^^ And they are SO soft! They feel like touching slippery silk. If you've ever touched a stingray, they pretty much feel identical. They feel quite similar to platannas as well, but silkier and more firm.
They are really fabulous now. It's amazing how creatures change over time and I can't believe these guys are already 4 months old!! Where has this year gone? Speaking of a silky skin, I also found that some gecko's have a skin like velvet - so soft and smooth. It's quite amazing when you think about it.
Keep the pics coming - I am dying to see them gravid and having babies. Do they lay eggs or live birth?
Thanks everyone Marion - it's not a good idea for these guys to breed before a year old (even though they reach sexual maturity at 5 months), and when they do, the male will deposit spermatophores all over the tank, which the female will pick up with her cloaca. She will then lay up to 1000 eggs (or a bit more!), which take around 20 days to hatch, depending on the temperature at which they are kept, You can read lots more here - http://www.axolotl.org/breeding.htm
I really want some now... Been following this thread since the start and love it. They are definitely on my wish list. Want to get back into aquariums and these fellows will be perfect for what I have in mind
Thanx once again for the thread!
