Ambystoma mexicanum breeding report---leucistic axolotl

Postby Phran » Wed Jul 10, 2013 5:36 pm

It was a pleasant suprise when i first saw my leucistic axolotls spawning a few weeks ago (especially since i got them as two females), and after eggs being laid, and 18-22 days of incubation, I have hatchlings!
what i noticed was that spawning was induced by the drop in temperature we (in the gauteng region) had a few weeks ago with the onset of a cold front.
The eggs were incubated in a separate aquarium at 20'C, and the hatchlings are feeding vigorously on live daphnia. here are some pics:

Thanks for sharing man.

They are stunning, what will you get out if you breed a female leucistic with a normal axolotl?

I read a while ago that Leucism across the board is caused by a recessive gene. If that's the case, you'd still get het Leucistics.

Hey jakes. Have you checked the genetics page on axolotl.org? Axolotl genetics works a bit funny, since the overall phenotype is affected by the expression of three(maybe more) pigments.
And because in most cases amphibians produce vast numbers of offspring, the variation among individuals from the same batch would be great. Thus anything is possible.

But your axies are het. Melanoid albino. So it will be interesting seeing what they produce

That why I'm asking, I did go over the page but still don't fully understand how the whole process works.

@ F1refly, if you like you're more than welcome to adopt one or two. I want to ensure that the little ones end up in good hands.

Depends, which province are you based? I'm in the Free State.

I've got all the right equipment at least, as I had a Pleco that somebody gave me but he was ancient so pegged it a few months back. And I doubt food would be a issue

Hi Phran, how many do you have and what is the mortality rate of the hatchlings? Do all of them survive?
