Frog/Toad ID

Postby rico » Tue Mar 22, 2016 10:46 am

Hi All ,

Recently built a pond and have 2 new guests. I am unsure if i need to get rid of them or let them be.
Both frogs/toads are similar in size and the coloration is the same.

Did some research and the closest ID I can derive is "Eastern Olive Toad".

Please shed some light.
Apologies for the bad quality image.

Thanks

HI Rico This is a Red Toad(Schismaderma carens)if they havent in the meantime changed the name!
I think its a fantastic privilege to have frogs in the pond.It would be the only reason for me to have a pond!

why would you want to get rid of them? they are pretty harmless... and they are bug control!

Hi Guys ,

Thanks for the responses.
The only reason I would want to get rid of them if they will cause a potential problem.
I have heard of cats/dogs being poisoned by toads , i am concerned about the other animals that share the same space. I am happy to let them be (my plan is to create a small ecosystem).

The particular toad in the pic lives in a huge tree trunk and a larger toad of the same species lives behind the trunk.

Red toads are not very poisonous and if your dog or cat does end up biting one, all it will do is cause some discomfort for a day. It will be once off and a lesson learned

I have a dog that tried eating one... he had a tummy ache and drooled excessively for about an hour... that was it... he just licks them now :)

Thanks Ales for the reply ... at least now I am a bit more comfortable.
@Bernice , I hope mine doesn't do the same .. he already drools a lot - i cant imagine that on a larger scale..
