Axolotl

Postby Kevin & Denise » Tue Apr 01, 2008 5:32 pm

This is our lone male Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

First day we got him (use the stone as a reference to size):

This is him now (give or take a couple of months)

We've tried several times to get a female but so far no luck...

He's so great.

He is a type of salamander. They're VERY cool little creatures and can be hand fed they're very cute. In fact mine will only eat if I hand feed them...

Unfortunately they are not more popular around these parts either, Canada that is. We are actually just in the middle of arranging shipping for a proven wildtype female. So if hopefully all goes well she should be here in the next week or so. From all the reading we've seen on these guys, they are only really popular in a couple of the states in the U.S. and New Zealand and Australia.
They are in labs everywhere, because they can spontaniously regenerate new limbs. Our male did this about a year and a half ago. Just shot out a new arm out of his elbow area. Pretty wild to see...
As for the legalities of being able to own something yet can't transport or buy and sell it. We've got some species like that here, a very frustrating law...

You cant use a stone for scale, cause the size of a stone can vary.

the stone is the same stone used so you can see a before and after!
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.

LJS if you use the same stone I guess it could be a reference. Unless you are stoned that is :)

Axolotols are endangered in the wild due to global warming, the hole in the ozone layer as well as pollution. They only occur in certain lakes high up in the mountains where is stays cool and gets cold in winter. The water is warming up, being polluted and receiving far more ultra violet radiation than in the past.

They stay and reproduce in the larval stage but can be convinced to turn into salamanders. In the wild they would probably dry out and not be able to survive so now, unlike other salamanders, they become sexually mature before metamorphosis has taken place.

Because they are still "larvae" they can regenerate limbs like other tadpole stages of similar amphibians but who lose that ability when they become mature.

Hi there. I am new at this - My brother's salamanders (Axolotl) just layed some eggs, which is now one week old - I got some of them and am watching them as they grow (in the eggs!) . Can someone please tell me what the legal issues are around these in SA? A have not been able to find any documentation on the net... does anyone know where I can? Marelize

Marelize the law is rather a grey area so I would just ensure the eggs are not eaten by the parents. When the babies hatch feed them daphnia or small brine shrimps. Once they are a few centimeters long sell them to friends with a stern warning to never release them.

Thanx Bushviper - the eggs hatched - and we're feeding them daphnia - seems to be successfull (about a week old!). Thanx for the advice.
