I've noticed too with my 400D that you can't use a ss speed higher than 200. However it doesn't affect me (yet) as I use about a 1/60 and f.16 + and get nice exposure.
The best things come to those who flip rocks.

That one looks pretty awesome,
the red sort of gives way to white.
