Nice!! I have yet to go on a call out. Over the weekend BV got a call for a snake in Garankuwa. He didn't go because it was late at night, and we both prefer him alive and owning a car. :(

stupid question, what do you guys/gals do with the snakes that you keep?

do you set them free again somewhere, or do you sell them? keep them?

That's great news Mr. G. It has begun

They are released in a safe area where they are not a threat to people or animals. ;)

The current catching permits are all for catch and release. In the past we sued to be able to keep any snakes we requested however that almost never happened because you catch the same species over and over.

Selling indigenous snakes in Gauteng is technically illegal so nobody even attempts going down that road.

I got a callout yesterday for a snake that was in a hole in the garden. I asked if it was not possibly a toad. Very snotty the reply came that they know what a frog looks like and the gardener had seen it before it went into the hole.

I drove out there which took about half an hour. They showed me the hole and I stuck my fingers in there and pulled out a toad. This is not the first time this has happened and I could see the moist eyes. The woman was so embarrassed that she hung her head in shame (her words) before going to get a donation for my time and petrol.

Today I got a callout and when I got there I gave the woman a pair of glasses (it was described as a rinkhals) and asked her to grab the other side of the water feature. She asked me to hang on, went inside and proceeded to pass comments from the balcony above! She still had the glasses on though.

I grabbed the rinkhals and she tossed down my bag which she had taken with her. Once the snake was safe and sound she came downstairs again. That was officially my first snake for this season.

   Gloves on Whip snakes work well if you dont want to get bitten even if you know you are not going to die. ;)

On Boomslang i wont try as it might just miss my Titaniuim padded gloves and catch my arm or something.

You lucky bugger, now stop typing and go roadcruising, and think of me :-P

Since that callout I have been on another two. The one had disappeared but the last one was a huge fat female rinkhals.

She "attacked" the owner of the house. The fact that a Jack Russel and a Beagle were trying to kill her would have made her rear up.

By the time I got there it was dark and I managed to see her resting in a flower bed. I scooped her out onto the lawn and dived on her. She was not happy but luckily uninjured.

The season is truly upon us.
