Some finds in Klipriviersberg Johannesburg South

Postby rvanhuyssteen » Wed Dec 12, 2012 8:26 am

Last week I went on a walk in the Koppies near my house and despite the cold weather and without looking too hard I found some interesting specimens.

First a habitat shot: note the kraal, these are very old structures and are estimated to have been erected by Sotho-Tsawana pastoral people who inhabited the area around 1300. The koppies are full of them. There must have been a lot of people living up there. These Koppies were also where Nongoloza had a hide out in the early days of Johannesburg.

Flipping some rocks I came across this scorpion, can anyone help me identify it? I think it is a Opistophthalmus species.

I also came across this little Leptotyphlops, I am not sure which species it is, but I'm guessing it is Peter's Thread Snake.

I also managed to photograph this Ground Agama (Agama aculeata) or is it A. atra?, they are very skittish up there,

The last find was this little Transvaal Gecko (Pachydactylus-affinis),

The scorpion is Opistophthalmus pugnax.

We forget we can go herping close by and if we replace the rocks etc then we can go again a year later and see if it has improved.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
