Wolf snake?

Wolf snake?

Postby Aidanhuman » Sat Aug 22, 2015 9:34 pm

I found this beautiful little snake last year while I was cleaning, found it right under my Tenrec enclosure! So I did some research and just could not identify it, so I took a picture of it before releasing it, to find out by someone who was a bit more knowledgeable about herps and all. I knew a guy at a zoo and he told me it was possibly a Wolfsnake, I would just like to find out for sure though, any help?

Hi there

You do have a Wolf Snake there, but what if it was a Rinkhals?

It's never a good idea to handle a snake which you cannot ID.

Thanks for the Id ;) , funny thing the guy I spoke to warned me about that as well. Which is also part of the reason I wanted to ID this snake here. I have learned my lesson though, as we do have to remove quite a few snakes close to the house in the summer time, a Rinkhals included! I don't handle ANY snakes I cant positively ID, after a incident where we found a brownish yellow snake moving through our lapa. We never knew what it was, so we tried catching it by prodding it with a stick to move into a large drum we had placed in front of it, until it lifted its head and opened up as a cobra does! Lesson learned: Be EXTRA cautious if you don't know what it is or what it can do! :smt018

Here is a picture of the one we caught, Cape cobra right?

Totally agree with you here. He did a mistake here and thank God he escaped from that situation without any damages.

Please add your location to your profile as it will help when trying to make IDs to know where you are situated.

But yes, you have a Cape Cobra there.

Westley, what are your key identifiers to tell that it is a cape cobra and not a snouted cobra ? Looking at that I can't seem to distinguish.

Actually, might be a Snouted Cobra

For some reason I had Southern/Eastern Cape in my mind, but I see now the poster has updated his location to Cullinan so Snouted Cobra would be spot-on. Well spotted Predator.

Haha, it just looked more like a snouted cobra to me, but when I saw your comment I second guessed it cause you are the man when it comes to ID's.
