Why I hate quarries!

Why I hate quarries!

Last week I got a phone call from woman who has caught snakes on their plot before. She asked if I could come to her work to pick up a puff adder that someone was bringing to her. I asked her just to drop it in a dustbin and put it in the shade because I would be about a hour. She said that this was not a problem as she had space next to her desk.

She then sent me an sms to say the person had brought it in a plastic bag and she had tipped it out into a bin.

Obviously I expected a baby puff adder because who would put an adult in a plastic bag.

I got there and she told me that the guy who saved the snake and brought it in had to stop someone from killing the snake after they caught it with a quad bike. I was wondering how the hell you catch a snake with a quad bike. She explained that the guy with the quad bike owns a quarry and saw this snake trying to get away from the heavy machines. He drove up to her and PARKED THE BIKE ON HER HEAD. He then ran around trying to find something to kill her with.

This good samaritan stopped him and picked up the snake without any catching equipment, put it in a see through bag and drove for 20 minutes with it on his front seat. The "Puff adder angel" must have been keeping an eye on this guy.

I took the snake out of the bin and she was still alive. I suspect that she is gravid. You can see from the pics that the blood was running out of her nose and she has scars on her neck but she is still alive after a week.

She is completely placid and does not even hiss. Her eyes are alert and she is moving around the cage without a problem. She is also due to shed and will get rid of this ugly red quarry colour.

I will keep you posted on her progress.

Well done Bitis angels!

I do think that the red/brown is rather nice.

No guesses whose head I like to park my quad bike on.
Don’t kill it, if you are not planning to eat it.

Me too Snakes Incorporated!

I like the colour too BV. Would be nice if it stayed that way after shedding.

Here she is after shedding her skin. The scars on the neck are still visible but she is far more lively and will survive.
