arum lily frog viv

arum lily frog viv

In July me and my dad built this viv.

At this time near my house there were lots of arum lily frogs.

Image

I even found these 3 in one flower. :D

I have 2 arum lily frogs and a stream frog in the viv.

Sorry for the bad pics.

We built the viv in 2 parts - each section was built on polystyrene sheet corners. Each section had a drift wood feature (one for a waterfall). We positioned the plant pots around these. Filler foam was used to hold/ secure these together.

Image

Foam surfaces were painted with pond sealer. While still wet we dusted this with Jungle Bed ( a mix of husk, bark pieces and powder). We hunted for 'egg crate' but no-one had heard of this so we resorted to cutting up the bases of ordinary plastic crates. This worked fine. This formed a platform on the bottom of the viv .

Image

There are 2 submerged pumps, one for the waterfall and one to filter the water. This is the water fall on the left of the viv.

Image

The finishing touches were to put in gravel, Jungle Bed, stones, spagnum moss, fish tank background picture and water. The viv was then ready to receive frogs! :D

Image

To keep the tank moist I use a Repti Fogger.

This is the fogged up viv!

Great work on the natural viv.
BUT to my knowledge is it not illegal to keep amphibians in the Western cape with or without permits?
Great work once again.

To my knowledge it is only illegal to keep invasive frogs.

In the Western Cape all frogs are protected too. Some just more than others.

If you are a land owner then it becomes murky and the law is not as concise. I am sure if these came off your property nobody could do anything to you.

Nice setup.

Thanx for the info Bush Viper. Nice to get more clarity. Do you know if this law applies to other areas as well or is it only in the Western Cape. We live on the banks of a vlei. Our property connects to the shoreline and there are lots of frogs in our garden and everywhere. We have leopard toads, stream frogs, sand frogs, platannas and the arums in our garden. We have the best frog choir during breeding season!

Hi everyone, because of low numbers of spiders in winter it was increasingly hard to find food for my frogs so I dicided to release my frogs. When it is spring again I will replace them with a new bunch.
