Sexing Rinkhals

Postby Allen G. Liebenberg » Mon Mar 24, 2014 4:44 pm

Hi All.I have 2 rinkhals both look like females. When probing them I find one has a probe depth of 6mm.and the other 11mm.
The 11mm one behaves like a male-What is it? hope someone can help please.

Hi Allen

When probing, it's not simply about the depth, because of course a meter long snake could probe 10mm while a hatchling only probes 2mm.

It's better to count subcaudal scales. That would be a better way to compare the two, rather the depth in mm.

Yeah anything past 5 subcaudals will be a male. You can also feel when the female is "wider' than the male.
