Shedding

Shedding

Postby Silvrav » Sat Aug 14, 2010 3:59 pm

Hi Guys

I would just like to enquire about shedding of the Morelia spilota cheynei. (searched the forum, but could not find anything)

I understand it depends on the growth and size of food, and and and, but what is the average time between shed's?

My gir's last shed was the 23rd July 2010. We are 1 week away for it being a month since her last shed and already had 2 rat pups....

Just a concerned parent, as I can not see any signs of shedding yet....

It is normally 1 month between each shed but like you said it does depend on size, food and growth

Silvrav, I've got no idea why these creatures are so different, but they do make one stress. My baby Jungle Carpets, which are already 8 months old have only shed twice since hatching. My Irian Jaya sheds a little more often, but defenitly not monthly. It is normal for them not to shed as regularly as other snakes. Don't stress, and as long as they are eating & happy, just be patient.

Thanks BB :) She is very happy and obviously as first time snake owner, I am new to most of it...

Took her out last night and she was very snappy!! Thinking that she might be getting ready to shed, but not too sure..her eyes looked milky, but it could be just cause i was tired, and my eyes being milky! lol

Jungles Carpet Pythons are really weird, when my adult male was 4 months old he shed before winter and did not again for 5 months.
This year he last shed on the 5th of January and again only on the 4th of August, 7 months!!
The female has shed twice during the same time.

One of the babies I have is in the blue again, so yours might shed again soon, but might not shed for a month or more. Don't worry too much.

Their color after shedding is always so different so it is not nice to have to wait so long between sheds.

Sounds like our Jungle Carpet as well.

She went from January to May without shedding.

She then shed twice in "rapid" succession (3 weeks apart), and is now shedding regularly every +-5 weeks, for now...

There should be some correlation between growth and shedding of reptiles. When they are young they grow faster, hence they will shed the skin more often.
Amphibians do also shed the skin, but it seems to relate to the time of the year. I've seen European toads eating their skin, when shedding. No proteins to be wasted.
