Ground Agama

Ground Agama

Postby Nickyd » Tue Jan 17, 2017 12:44 pm

Hello everyone
Because I have Bearded Dragons, a couple of months ago people brought a small, dehydrated baby Agama to me (they thought it was a Beardie). I have only this week identified it, as a Ground Agama. What a beautiful little animal it is. My question is, am I allowed to keep it? and if not, who will take it from me? I really love the little guy, and want what is best for him/her.

Hi Nicky

It depends on what province you are in. In KZN you are legally allowed to keep the agama without any problems.

However, in all the other provinces it is illegal to keep a wild-caught reptile.

Agamas have very strict requirements in terms of lighting en general husbandry, so I recommend you find out where the people who brought it to you got it, and release it again.

It is never a good idea to release an animal in a different location so it is very important that you find out where it came from.

Regarding who will take it from you, likely no one.
