Basilisk with a prolapsed....hmmm

Basilisk with a prolapsed....hmmm

hemipene...
Found our boy with one hemipene out, looking like a piece of old biltong. We popped him into a bin with a bit of water in the bottom, which seemed to rehydrate it a bit, and after speaking with the vet on the phone (we are a 100km round trip from the vet, except on Tues and Thurs) have kept it lubricated with KY in the hope that it would pop back in unassisted. It doesn't seem to be troubling him too much, ate 3 fuzzies today and is as fiesty as ever. Planning to take him to the vet tomorrow to see if it can be reinserted, needs other treatment, or, heaven forbid, needs to be removed  (sorry guys) - but wondering if anyone has had anything similar before?

If it has not pulled back and has dried then it will have to be removed surgically. He will be able to use the other one and still father little ones.

If it was still damp with a good blood supply then by soaking it a strong sugar solution you could have saved it but from what you are describing I think he is going to become "left handed".

Took him to the vet, and he is now "left handed"as you say. Poor boy, that must not have been pleasant. What causes this, is is the female jumping away and twisting it? Or is it something we could have prevented?

Iggy there can be various reasons. The muscles could have been weakened during mating and then they cannot retract all they way to where the hemipene can become engorged and because the blood could not return to the body then it stays everted and dries. If you had noticed it straight away you might have been able to help him but there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

He should still be able to father kids in future.
