Mozambique Spitting Cobra at Lowveld National Botanical Gard

Postby Yolandé » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:32 pm

I was walking through the Lowveld National Botanical Gardens in February at a very leisurely pace when suddenly this guy slowly moved away from me, and went into a hole in the ground (not deep - I know this cause stupid me, tried peeping into the hole to see where the snake went.... )

So I decided to stay deadstill waiting for him to show again, cause I wanted a more decent look at him.... eventually I forgot about him while photographing some of the birds in the tree across the path, when I noticed him again, he came out of the hole and was looking straight at me. A rather unsettling feeling, he didnt seem scared at all.

Fortunately I decided to leave him alone and walk on....thank goodness, cause someone has now ID'd him for me as a Mozambique Spitting cobra

Awesome picture...You lucky he didn't spit at you while you were looking down the hole as they don't need to hood to spit!

Lovely pic Yolande - thanks for sharing! It really is the best to see pics of snakes in their natural habitat, carrying on with their business.

Thanks everyone. Yes I'm lucky to still be around :-)
And yes...he does have a mean look. That's what struck me most: he seemed fearless of me, in the way he came back out to stare at me. That made me realise: "oh now...get away from this guy."

Very nice. He would have not pursued you. He was just checking if the coast was clear. LOL
