thelotornis feeds

Postby xerophak » Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:00 am

I have recently adquired a thelotornis and she is eating mice without any problems. I am aware that in nature this species normally feeds on lizards and frogs and was wondering if by feeding only with mice I could end up making her ill (hepatitis etc) and if I should feed her lizards every now and then (what frequency?) or if I should stop feeding her mice all together.
Thank you in advance!

Rodents and birds are part of this snakes natural diet too, so feeding mice should not be a problem.

Wow, I really love the green coloration on the head. Really beautiful snake you got there.

Thelotornis from certain areas feed on mice readily and do so for many years in captivity without problems.

You can see when the snake is getting fat and then just ensure she gets smaller food items less frequently.

I am almost positive the snake pictured is T. kirtlandii which is generally a lot larger than the T. capensis and is perhaps more inclined to tackle birds and mammals in the wild. I think it should be fine on this diet in captivity provided like BV said it is not over fed.
Interestingly I remember reading a statistic in some of the older South African literature that states very specifically 1 in every 40 T.capensis specimens will settle and feed in captivity. I am not sure what those figures are based on but a very interesting statement never the less.
Lovely animal, great post - thanks.

I agree with you Amphibian... much to green for a T. capensis
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.
