Alien Invasive list changes.

The changes to the National Alien Invasive list have been proposed and comments can be submitted for a 30 day period from the 29th of May 2015.

The best news is that Corn snakes, Jackson's chameleons and Meller's chameleons can now be kept with no restrictions excluding any provincial regulations which are still effective in certain provinces.

Basically all that matters is that Boa constrictors and Green iguanas have been removed for Gauteng, Burmese pythons have had the new scientific name added and require permits country wide and North African pythons are prohibited.

Red eared sliders which had to be euthanased may now be kept without a permit however trade and transporting them is illegal.

Anyways, sorry to do this... I tried to read through the document (a quick scan). When you say Boa constrictor and Green iguanas have been removed from Gauteng... Do you mean they aren't allowed to be kept/sold/transported, permit or no permit, in Gauteng?

And just for a personal question - Do you think people will actually abide by this? I mean what are people going to do with their burmese pythons that live 20-30 years?

In the past Boas constrictors required permits in Gauteng. Now they do not. Same with the Iguana.

People will simply have to apply for their Burmese python permit , I doubt that natcon will deny permits for the majority of Burmese python keepers in the country , because thye would then be throwing thousands of Rands away.

Bitis rhinoceros and nasicornis will require pemits or are they outlawed ?

Today I got a call from the permit office saying that they are willing to issue a possession permit for my two captive bred Jungle Carpets but not breeding permits. However they can only issue breeding permits once they have conducted their own Risk assessment which could take a few years. I think pigs will sooner fly than this ever actually happening.

I can just imagine the sheer level of incompetence involved when conducting their own Risk Assessment. Maybe this is something that the THA can try engage them with to try ensure an accurate Risk Assessment for carpets that won't take years.

Anyway.... apparently my permit will soon be posted to me and a scanned email copy sent as a backup. I filled for permits in August 2014 and only now some feedback from them.

What is the ruling in KZN with regards to the Boa Constrictors? Are they still banned here? Or can someone please post a link to the updated list? Thankyou =)
