Hi Everyone

Hi people,

I am from Cape Town and after doing some research into exotic animals (was leaning towards a tarantula at first, but can not get a license for it)
I decided to get a corn snake. Xena is a normal colored corn and is around 8 months old. Currently she is 40 cm long, waiting for her to be 60 till I put her into a new vivarium. Will hope to post some pics soon and become a active members in this forum.

He there. Many of us started with a corn snake. There is lots of advice about corn snakes on this forum so just search and you should find it.

Thanks for the welcome.

I have looked up a lot of stuff before getting the corn snake. I am under same impression as one of the other members who stated the pet peeve about people buying snakes without research. (cant remember exact thread)

But I am still learning and still browsing through the articles here, especially the ones about vivarium building and what things to use/not use inside it as I am busy (trying) to design and build my own.

Hi
Welcome AS.Legion

Bet you will find this site quite addictive and most helpful.
I also started off with a corn snake, and before I knew it I was hooked. To such an extent I obtained a baby Diamondback Rattler and have a Green Mamba on the way.
No matter what type of snake you purchase the people on this site are most kind. You can feel we all share the same thing: warmth of loving reptiles.

Once again,a warm welcome and beware of that bug bite.

At least getting bitten by a corn is not bad at all. Thats why they are such excellent beginner snakes, not because they are easy to keep, but because you can learn to handle snakes, without any risk.

Your corn probably wasn't handled very often and thus took a bite at you, or you were handling rodents just before going for the snake. I have a snow corn that is very feisty and regularly try and get me, I just leave him for a couple of minutes, tending to all the other snakes, then go back to him and he is calmer. Just let him get use to you.

good on you for doing the research necessary to obtain the knowledge needed to look after your snake. I have a friend that bought a corn from me, but without doing any research, the snake went with full setup. I told him that he can only collect the snake from me, once he has done at least the basic research on the snake, he is collecting from me next weekend when in PTA again. I wish pet shops would do the same, but some one needs to still pay the rent, so thats not going to happen! :(
