Illegal, so what do we do?

Postby Bianca » Mon Nov 07, 2011 2:59 pm

Hi there,

There's a shop selling a pair of Tarantula's which are indigenous and illegal to trade. Told the guy who worked there that it was illegal and probably won't sell, he said "watch me".

Just want to know if we have any responsibility to report this, or do we just leave it?

I get really upset with the illegal trade of Chameleons etc and would not hesitate to report if I knew of anything fishy, and I don't think that just because it's a Tarantula that I should feel any different.

But would anyone care, is it serious enough?

There's too much of this going on in SA...

What species of tarantula's were they baboon Spiders?

If so they are TOPS species if i am not mistaken.

Im sure BV or something who knows the in's and out of the permit system up in JHB would be able to give you more info.

It's rather frustrating seeing people like that.
Organized crime comes in more forms than one.

It was an Orange Baboon (OBT or Pterinochilus murinus), very beautiful and hard to miss!

I hate it when people like that sell animals without a permit. I've heard that you Do need a permit to sell Orange Baboons. This just makes me mad!

OBT's are not an indigenous species. They come from Kenya and they don't occur within SA. Although I do think they are blacklisted as they can potentially become an invasive species.

Oh, whoops, didn't know they weren't from here. To be honest, don't know much about T's. I just get a bit concerned when people are openly keeping and selling, when they know it's not allowed. It means people aren't scared to get caught. Which is worrying.

Still, they may not be sold as of yet, and are protected in South Africa under the genus Pterinochilus. I say report this to the relevant authorities, especially if the guy has such an attitude. In my opinion, those are exactly the type we do not want in this hobby, as they are the type that would not hesitate to set unwanted animals free in a open field or similar place if the cooking gets hot.

The chances are pretty good these were smuggled in in any case.

Call 0827590078 and report it there. Make sure you ask the name of the official who you are speaking to and ask him when you can phone him back to hear what happened.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Buying and selling *captive bred* animals shouldn't be illegal anyway! That said I fully agree with needing permits to catch animals that are not on your property (which isn't a nature conservation area).

The Green scorpions are going there to confiscate the Tarantula's (there were two) and fine the owner. The T's will get donated to a zoo.

I know a few people went into the shop after my bf posted something about it on another forum and complained and advised the owner that they were sending someone to take action. Apparently the owner's attitude is shocking! Tsk Tsk... Not a good way to earn regular customers, is it?
