Help applying for EA Gaboon permit

Postby Jacquesvw » Tue Apr 03, 2012 7:18 pm

Hi guys,

I live in the North West province and found someone wanting to sell two female east african Gaboon adders (Bitis Gabonica) to me. Both snakes are captive bred, but the problem is the guys owning them at the moment doesn't have a permit, so I have no way of proving they were not collected from the bushes somewhere.

How would I be able to apply for a holding permit if I don't have a permit number for the person selling them?

Any advice or knowledge on the subject would be very welcome.

I would sagest you leave the deal ! Rather wait for until someone who has all the necessary paperwork has some available again.

I'm almost 100% sure there is no way you'll be able to get permits if they're not from a legal source.

Regards.

Why does the guy selling them not have a permit? I agree with eyelash, leave them alone, those are TOPS animals and will be big trouble if you get caught without permits!

I really do not know why this guy doesn't have a permit, but maybe it's worth a shot trying to apply? If the application is turned down I lost nothing?

You can try apply but without proof of legal origin (permit) I doubt you will have any success.

The guy has to have a permit just to sell them to you. He also has to have a keeping permit before he can get that. Without these attached to your application they will not even consider your permit.

Sorry but that is like trying to say a friend has some rhino horn without a permit which you want to buy but as soon as he gets a permit he will send it to you. That's not going to happen.

Oh well, guess I'll let this deal pass and look for a legitimate dealer.

If someone knows about a person selling legal East African Gaboons (B. gabonica), please send me a private message with his/her contact details.

Just for interest sakes, did you see the animals and confirm that they are Bitis gabonica? Also what price range was he looking at for them? (You may pm me rather if you wish).

Yes I saw them.

When I spoke to him on the phone I asked whether they were WA or EA Gaboons and he his reply was WA. Upon inspection though, I identified them as EA.

The price was extremely high, but I'll PM you the details. All communication stopped from the seller though, because he is probably afraid that I will report him now that he knows they are EA Gaboons. I'm not sure if he really thought they were WA or if he was only trying to fool me into thinking they were WA.

What will Natcon do if they confiscate animals like these? It would be a shame if they euthanized them.
Don't worry, its completely tame . . .

I'm definitely not going to report the guy that's for sure, because he is taking good care of them after all. I'm just sad that I couldn't buy them without breaking the law.

You wouldve had a better chance at keeping those snakes if they were exotics sadly.. Down here there are many people that have "high end" snakes without permits and some have been genuine such as the guy not needing permits in a particular province then moving here etc..
If it hasnt yet, it will!

Yes, in North West it's ok to keep exotic snakes, just like Gauteng. I already have two b. rhinoceros, but two b. gabonica would have been great for my collection.

I'm still searching for b. gabonica on permit, but they are hard to find.

When you do find them they are pretty expensive too.
