My boa died

At one stage or the other, we all deal with a death. It is never nice losing a pet and thus, you can share your loss with the rest of us and share your memories so that they will be remembered.

My boa died

Postby CarlaSmit87 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 10:12 am

Last night when I got home I saw one of my adult male boas in a peculiar position, when I took him out I first thought he was dead but on close examination I found from right behind his neck till about halfway in his body he was paralized. In that part he was very floppy. Also when poking him with a hair pin in that area there was no reaction, but when poking him in last part of his body he would flinch. Further on I could see nothing wrong, he flicked his tongue as usual but just could'nt move with that part. So I placed him in another enclosure and kept him warm but this morning he was dead :smt010 .
He was fine until yesterday when I found him like that, he ate an ekstra large rat on Tuesday. His enclousure is a "double-story" so it's quite high.
Could he have fallen inside his cage and damaged his spine?
At first I did'nt want to post because I know some people will find something to bash me about and I realy dont have the energy for that as I'm realy depressed about this but I want to know what went wrong :smt010 :smt010 :smt010
I placed his body in a bag in the freezer.

Nobody is going to bash you Carla, these terrible things happen to us all, and sometimes, as in your case, we may never know why. That's what hurts the most.
So very sorry for your loss.
Take care

So sorry to hear, I have no idea what happened but I'm certain you did nothing wrong so please don't feel guilty about it.

On the bright side maybe it is time to get a new baby, it definitely helps with the healing process!

Sorry for the loss :(

Do you know of someone that could do an autopsy for you?
Or are you going to let him RIP?

I have heard a similar story before that might be the cause of death in your boa aswell??...

A 2,5meter African rock python ate a huge meal.He had a high cage aswell with lots of branches to climb on.The python was climbing in a tree and lost his ballance, but managed to get his head between a fork in a branch. The weight of his body ,with the big meal to add to it,broke his neck as he basically hung himself before he fell to the ground.

Sorry for your loss Carla.I'm sure these things can even happen in the wild(if that's the cause of death of your boa)

Thanks for all the nice messages, I realy appreciate it.
Something else he already was a bit "blown-up" this morning, Now I don't know if it is because he was in a warm enclousure which let decomposition(spelling?) set in faster?
But could this not mean the rat was "off" How would I know if the rat was bad.
I buy my xtra large rats from the university laboratory and they are realy hectic about hygiene.

He was 2m long and I guess around 5kg's so an xtra large rat was'nt that of a big meal.

An Autopsy I have done before but not knowing anatomically how they should/should'nt look I guess if there is something wrong it must be quite obvious for me to see...
If I do it I will add photo's if I find something weird.
