Postby Lamprophis » Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:58 am

Hi guys

This has probably been and will remain an endless debate. Which of the following ten (10) snake species is the most venomous on the planet. I think I have listed the top 10 venomous species. However; If you are of the opinion that it is none of the below, please state which species you think it is. Please note that I am asking for most venomous and not most dangerous:(In alphabetical order as per scientific name)

Bothrops asper - Yellow-jawed Tommygoff a.k.a Fer-de-lance
Bothrops jarararcussu - Jarararcussu
Bungarus caeruleus - Common Krait
Bungarus multicinctus - Multi-banded Krait
Dendroaspis polylepis - Black Mamba
Naja naja philippinensis - Philippine Cobra
Notechis seutatus - Tiger snake
Ophiophagus hannah - King Cobra
Oxyuranus microlepidotus - Inland Taipan
Vipera russellii - Russell's Viper

Id say its Oxyuranus microlepidotus without question.
Then again the most venomous snake would be the one that just bit you.

As far as I know the most venomous AFRICAN snake is the boomslang. I also heard the inland Taipan was the most venomous terrestrial snake, but one of the kraits take the crown for most potent venom drop for drop. Wouldn't mind some reputable information on this subject... as discovery documentaries can make a herald look life threatening :)

I suppose all have their pro's and cons like imagine something like a puff adder the size of a Black mamba with the venom of a Boomslang with the venom delivery system of the puff adder. Now that would be one mega dangerous animal!

I know what you mean the discovery channel and national geographic have a tendency to amplify the reptiles of "Africa the wild and savage continent".

That would quiet something to behold.

Just a thought that crossed my mind, it may have come up before, but what if say someone bred a venomous snake such as a taipan to a corn snake, it must be possible cause there are alot of hybrids out there. Would the out come be a venomous snake? I was under the impression that the inland taipan was the most venomous.

The inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) is not the world's most toxic venomous snake. It is right in stating that it is the most venomous terrestrial snake in the world. Neither is it Beaked sea snake (Enhydrina schistosa). A snake which is 100 times more venomous that the Taipan, Beaked sea snake or any other snake on earth is Hydrophis belcheri, Belcher's sea snake. A few milligrams of H.belcheri's myotoxic venom is enough to kill an estimate of more than 1000 people. If H.belcheri injects venom, death may follow within 15 to 35 minutes. Painful death may even take less time depending on the victim's body size and time taken by infected blood to reach vital organs. It is the most venomous species of snake known to date and holds a record in Guinness Book.[Source: http://www.manbir-online.com/htm2/snake.22.htm]

I once heard the sea snake Hydrophis belcheri has the most toxic venom. Up there are Boomslang and Inland Taipan. Not sure of the 'current' culprit with the most toxic venom.
