Permits?

Postby Lillypod » Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:54 pm

Good day

I live in Richards Bay and on a trip to Durban recently I saw some nice mammals sold as pets in petshops, these include chinchillas, pygmy hedgehogs and sugar gliders. Do I require permits for these animals to keep, breed and sell?

Also, do I need permits for newts and pacman frogs?
And for ferrets?
Is a ferret and a mink the same thing?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to do the right thing.

Thanks for your time

A ferret and a mink are not the same thing.

Lillypod you really need to get hold of your local conservation office and enquire from them. We can tell you anything but that will not help you if someone advises you incorrectly.

Think about this. If the pet shop in Durban is selling these animals then the chances are pretty good you do not need a permit. KZN does not require permits for any exotic species at this stage although the list of "banned or blacklisted" animals (for which you cannot get a permit) is difficult to get out of them. The national list of blacklisted animals has not been published either but we expect ferrets and minks to be on that list.

Ferrets are domesticated polecats and minks are a different species altogether.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Hi Lillypod,

Did you contact the KZN head office, or did you contact the officer in charge of Umhlatuze?

When I was making inquiries, they told me "Hi,
Please discuss your intentions with your relevant District Conservation Officer. I have attached the list. We only issue permits once they have written out the appropriate application and send it to us authorised and with the relevant proof of payment.

Thanks very much,"

Our local officer's name is Pumla Zulu, and can be contacted via e-mail, at the following e-mail address: zulup@kznwildlife.com.

Hope this helps,
Joh
The one aspect that people try to remove from naturalism, and that is to me the most important, is prayer. Without Prayer I would not have managed to do half the things that I have done successfully.

A small colony of Oxyhaloa dubia, two Tivia sp., an unidentified species of Cockroach, 8 tadpoles, 3 dogs, 4 cats, a budgie, and some other random animals.

Good Morning,
I am wanting to buy 2 baby hedgehogs. I live in Port Elizabeth and am wondering if I need a permit? If you could point me in the right direction that would be great :)

You'll have to contact your regional permits office. If they are blacklisted in the area you won't get a permit for them.
