Cockatiels

Postby Lillypod » Mon Sep 03, 2012 9:12 am

My cockatiels started laying eggs by 18 August, by 26 August they had 5 eggs, I check on the eggs every other day and noticed over the weekend one eggs is turning grey... It almost looks like a zebra with grey and white stripes. Is that egg rotten?

Answering myself, It's rotten and the reason for that is a tiny crack.

As you have answered.

Also it is not always best to check daily.
Perhaps once or twice a week at most if you need to check.

I bred cockatiels for many years and found this to be disruptive, I eventually just left them to do their thing checking perhaps 2-3 times throughout until hatching and then the same till babies left the nest (unless you picking them to handrear).
They became so good at it, I could trust them.

Man, I miss them, I had a stunner of a male.

My female was handreared. I will be handrearing the babies, its their (and my) first clutch, I check every second day or so or when i notice a behavioral change in the parents.

Being a first clutch, they are still working things out.

By the second or third clutch they should be good to go.

Best of luck, good times to come.
Holding thumbs for them.

Hi Lillypod, maybe leave one of the chicks behind when you pull the rest for h/r. Give the parents a chance to try. You will be amazed that even first time parents do a great job, it's the way the were created to do things. I have many pairs of parrots that raise the entire batch of babies first time over. Also i don't go and check to often, I wait till I don't see the hen around for a number of days. Giving her a chance to lay, then check after a few days. If there are eggs I give it another 10 days and check to candle the eggs. If they are fine leave them there and thats that. Check in another 2 weeks if they have hatched, and pull the ones for h/r about 14 days after hatching. If you don't bother the birds to much they will be far happier and feel safer and you will get tons of chicks.
Gareth is correct in saying that you do get problem parents but pulling the babies as soon as they hatch is a very tedious task. Feeding every 1-2 hours as the crop is far to small to hold a lot of formula.

All the best to you, birds are very rewarding when you h/r them. Hard part is sending them to new homes once you wean them.
Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles,
It takes away today's peace.

Absolutely correct here. I forgot that I did this aswell for the first timers, leave a baby or even the whole brood if it is a small one.
Let them learn what needs to be done. The instinct is amazing.

Important time to pep up their diet for the babies.

I wasn't going to pull them right after they hatched, was going to wait 2 weeks then take them out, they are healthier that way, my dad bred with birds and he helps where he can.

We had bad rains for a couple of days and everything got wet, I noticed neither of the birds go into the nest, I had to check, nestbox was soaked and they abandoned the eggs, this happened 2 days ago and they haven't been in the box since. I have the eggs in the incubator now, will have to see if they make it, I don't know how long they weren't sat on, but they were cold. :(

Oh and I check the nestbox only when both parents are eating, I sneak around the cage, they don't even know I'm there.
