Bats

Postby snake-5 » Tue Mar 20, 2007 1:11 pm

I have a colony of bats living in my roof does anybody have any idea on how to make a bat box, they seem to be making a hell of a mess in there so i would just like to move them outside and get them theire own place to live.

Do a google search. I know the box has to have a certain sized entrance and also has to face a certain way away from the sun or something like that. There is a bat society that makes these but I have no details sorry.

we had a guy called Nigel Hornsby, from Pretoria, who advised us re bat boxes (think he is the president of the bat protection society or similar) - he will help you ID your bat species as different species have different requirements such as shape, layout, height, placement. He also builds appropriate bat boxes, or if you look at the website for bat conservation international you can also buy books etc.
His number (hope its still up to date) is 012 659 0087

Here is a link for people in Gauteng.

http://www.batsgauteng.org.za/index.html

You can put a bat house up. But it might take some time before they will move into the house.

I have been thinking of putting some bat houses up in the garden just for fun. Do a search on the net, there are quite a few sites with lots of info.

There is a bat interest group in Durban aswell.
