URGENT! Nhlangwane

Hi Jen, a bit late but we call the olive grass snakes and other whip snake sp. "Nhlangwane"
Symptoms seem to fit a proper bite from what I've seen.

From what my great gran tells me, it sounds like a Night Adder but she's saying it's predominantely brown and has 'other colours' (old people tend to not be very specific when it comes to detail)s and it's definately not a cobra. But from her description I'd say Night Adder.

Jen would you say that she is recovering and at least seen the worst of it?

I have never heard of compartment syndrome from a night adder bite. Must have been really serious then.

If it was a puffie she would be bleeding from the bite site and bruising in the inside of the elbow and arm pit. Blisters only form after a day or two.

There is no other snake from that area which is that length, that girth, with the patterns described and would cause those symptoms besides a night adder.

BV: I hear you - That's why I was initially concerned about the identity of the snake - because from my reading, a compartment syndrome is definitely not the norm! I suppose it was just a large dose of venom in a very little hand.
She's done well over night - she had a period of high potassium (due to breakdown of muscle because of the compartment syndrome) but all of her latest blood results are normal. She's passing a good amount of urine - so those kidneys are being flushed well. All in all looks like she'll be fine
