Berber Skink Substrate

Postby Quintinvdm » Sat Jan 18, 2014 8:24 pm

Hi,

Just bought a baby berber skink (about 14 cm from tip of nose to tip of tail)

Currently have it on newspaper. Went to buy substrate today. Pet store did not have reptile sand but sold me corn cob which they said was appropriate.

Having second thoughts. Is it safe or do I stick with the paper until I can get sand.

Thanks

Just my personal opinion here, but I don't like the corn cob.I'd much rather go for potting soil as it won't go moldy, holds humidity better and looks more natural.

Yeah in a pinch dry potting soil is fine. Far better than corn cob. That stuff is rubbish.

Advice from a petshop is horrible advice. They will say anything to sell you anything. My word of advice from personal experience is that petshop is eventually going to sell a sick animal or an animal that is a pensioner that they all say is only 2. Trust me they will say they never sold you the animal sick and blame it on the temperature you are keeping your animals.

Get Timothy Zedis number on his website. www.timsreptiles.co.za
He is a great guy, goes out of his way to provide excellent service and delivers either to your door or local post office. He drove 50kms out of his way to deliver an incubator to me free of delivery charge.

Not always. Go easy on the generalizations.

Yes not always but the few honest petshops know who they are and have good reputations such as Repzotix.
Please don't denote me over a misunderstanding. I meant most so I apologise if you have an honest establishment and I offended you.
